I've enjoyed reading Amish fiction over the years. This particular genre has become quite popular recently with more and more authors coming onto the scene. Beverly Lewis is the original -- and in my opinion, the best of them all. Her stories are always engaging, inspiring and have an authentic ring to them. When the stress of life wears me down, I love escaping into a Beverly Lewis story where life seems simpler, although not always easier.

The Love Letters is the story of Marlena, a young Amish woman who is spending the summer helping her widowed Mennonite grandmother. When her estranged sister is suddenly unable to care for her baby daughter, Marlena and her grandmother agree to care for the little girl. They expect her to stay only a few weeks.

The situation becomes increasingly complicated when the little girl's stay is extended -- and they both grow increasingly attached to baby Angela Rose. Marlena's Old Order Amish beau disapproves of the arrangement and of Marlena's recent participation in church more liberal than his own. She is forced to choose between him and the new life she's found.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Beverly Lewis always does an excellent job of exploring the tensions between various Amish groups and the relationship of the Amish with non-Amish, also called the English. Marlena is a likable character and it is easy to sympathize with her problems. The story resolved very nicely!

I received this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for a review. I was not required to write a favorable review but could not help it in this situation!

Book description: "Marlena Wenger's life takes an unexpected turn on the day she learns she must care for her estranged sister's baby. Spending the summer in Brownstown, Pennsylvania, to assist her Mennonite grandmother, and miles from Marlena's Old Order Amish beau, she feels out of her element in nearly every respect. Yet Marlena determines to do her best and stay focused on her future, even as those hopes become drastically altered."

My review: This is another great book by Beverly Lewis! The title of the book is so appropriate. Mrs. Lewis has woven different "love letters" throughout the story. Although the book is mainly about Marlena Wenger, there are other characters with their stories intertwined with Marlena's. With those characters come some very weighty issues, but Mrs. Lewis did a wonderful job handling these delicate topics! Marlena is a wonderful character, who sacrifices a lot to do what is right. She is a marvelous example of placing others needs ahead of your own and gives the reader much to contemplate. Loving all the characters as well as the story, I know fans of Beverly Lewis will not be disappointed with "The Love Letters". I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I love the way this author's writing voice immediately coaxes me into another world. I feel like she's sitting next to me, relating the tale in the age old oral tradition of a classic storyteller. And, of course, I'm hanging onto her every word.

Lewis weaves seemingly diverse story threads together to create an unforgettable celebration of the power that comes from the many facets of love. Young Jake and a collection of love letters are the catalysts that stir things ups for a number of characters -- each on a journey of discovery; finding strength and courage in unforeseen places. A breathtaking read.
